Victor Wembanyama has revealed that one of his first goals in basketball is to defeat Team USA with France in the 2024 Olympics.
The 19-year-old star is set to become the first overall draft pick in 2023, seen as one of the greatest ever NBA prospects as he heads over from playing professionally in France.
And while he's ecstatic begin his new life in the NBA, almost certainly to be with the San Antonio Spurs after they won the right to have the first pick, Wembanyama is not afraid to say he's hoping to beat them next summer.
The Olympics will be held in Paris, around an hour from where 'Wemby' grew up, and although still a teenager, he'll be the star of the team that will hope to upset Team USA.
France will be one of the few sides who will feel that they have any kind of shot against the American side, while being able to start NBA stars Wemby along with Rudy Gobert, Nicholas Batum, Evan Fournier and Killian Hayes.
Speaking to the French media, he said: "You know the Olympics are in Paris in 2024. And there could be no more perfect occasion for me to win my first title with the French national team."
Wembanyama smiled, before adding: "My goal is to beat Team USA in the final."
A prospect extremely comfortable and confident in his abilities, Wemby celebrated when he found out that the Spurs were given the first pick - with the team already reportedly eyeing Tim Duncan to work with him.
After the announcement, the teenager said he is targeting a championship ring he told ESPN: "[I’m] A team player, I’m going to do everything to win as many games as I can and I’m trying to win a ring ASAP so be ready. I’m going to try bring my talents here, I love Texas, I’ve been there before. "I’m really happy and I really can’t wait to meet the fans and hopefully the team I’m going to join.”
A player unlike no other, the Frenchman towers off his defenders at a whopping 7ft 3in. At that height, he is accomplished at shooting from distance, passing like a guard and block shots with his absurdly tall wingspan.
In his final year in the professional league in France, he averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game - while also starring in a game against Henderson's G League Ignite team, when he scored 37 points.
