Vera fans will want to cancel all plans for Sunday, February 19 as Ann Cleeves has broken news of a 'stormy' series finale for the ITV drama.
Vera has now been pulling in millions of viewers for over a decade and it's in no small part to North East based author Anne, whose DCI Stanhope books are the inspiration for the show that Sunday nights just wouldn't be the same without.
Fans have to wait nearly a year for new Vera episodes, after series 11 was unexpectedly cut off in its prime in early 2022. Their patience was rewarded last month when Brenda Blethyn returned in the guise of her no nonsense detective alter ego for the last two parts of series 11 - Vital Signs and The Way the Wind Blows.
Vera's long awaited comeback continued last weekend with Against The Tide, which featured an 80s TV icon and the exit of Paul Kaye as Dr Malcolm and there are still three more episodes to come in its current run. The next, For the Grace of God sees the Vera action switch to Newcastle as Dr Malcom's replacement makes their debut.

And Anne has already got excited for the fourth episode of series 12 and the last of the latest run. It's called The Darkest Evening and having had a sneak preview, Anne tweeted:. I've had sneak preview and love it. It's stormy and gothic and we find out more about Hector's awful family."
Her post got plenty of responses, with one of Anne's followers replying: "Ooh I cannot wait! The book was excellent" and another telling the writer: "I always thought it would make a fantastic episode! Can't wait"
An ITV preview for The Darkest Evening's synopsis teases: "On the night of a massive storm, trying to get home, DCI Vera Stanhope comes across an abandoned car with a baby inside. With no mobile signal and blocked roads at every turn, Vera is forced to seek refuge somewhere she’d rather not be, Brockburn House, the Stanhope’s ancestral pile.."
It adds: "Vera doesn’t exactly receive a warm welcome from her estranged family as there’s a function in full swing and her turning up with a baby isn’t a great look. Things start to look even worse and take a far sinister turn when a body is found on the track leading to Brockburn House."
