Vaibhav Sooryavanshi targets historic 200 in T20 cricket, eyes Chris Gayle’s iconic record

The 15-year-old, who has already made headlines for his explosive batting across junior and domestic cricket, openly declared his ambition while speaking to former England captain Kevin Pietersen on The Switch podcast. When reminded of the current record, he made his intention clear: surpass the legendary 175.

That record belongs to West Indies icon Chris Gayle, who smashed an unbeaten 175 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Pune Warriors India during the 2013 Indian Premier League season — a knock widely regarded as one of the most destructive innings in T20 history.

“Yeah, I want to break his record and score 200. If I play 20 overs in any game, I definitely will break that record,” Sooryavanshi reportedly said, expressing full confidence in his ability to push beyond current limits.

The youngster has already come close to monumental scores on multiple occasions. He struck a massive 190 in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match for Bihar and also registered a 175 in the final of the Under-19 World Cup, underlining his ability to play marathon innings.

In T20 cricket, his highest score stands at 144. He also made headlines in the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup, where he scored a rapid century — placing him among elite Indian names such as Rishabh Pant, Abhishek Sharma, and Urvil Patel for fast-scoring feats.

Sooryavanshi’s rise has drawn comparisons with cricketing greats, including Sachin Tendulkar, who famously became the first player to score a double century in ODI cricket in 2010 against South Africa in Gwalior.

With more opportunities expected in upcoming T20 competitions, the teenage prodigy continues to push boundaries, firmly believing that the long-standing “Universe Boss” record of 175 could one day be surpassed — and possibly by a double-century landmark never seen before in the format.
