Uttarakhand: Purkal school celebrates birth anniversary of founder

DEHRADUN: The birth anniversary of the founder of Purkal Youth Development Society (PYDS), GK Swamy, was celebrated on Tuesday.

Swamy, who passed away two years ago, is regarded as a visionary educationist of the Doon valley, who pioneered free quality education for underprivileged children by setting up PYDS that has helped transform the lives of many children in Purkal and surrounding villages of Dehradun.

According to a communique from PYDS, the day started with special assemblies of the junior and senior schools.

“In the senior school assembly, a remembrance prayer was sung by the choir. Gunjan Raturi from Class VIII shared her experience of meeting Swamy Sir. She highlighted how his wisdom and teachings had transformed her perspective on life, emphasising the idea that life is meant for giving. Her speech resonated with the audience, serving as a source of motivation for all,” the communique said.

The communique added that “Pihu Joshi of Class V of the junior school spoke about the concept of 'giving,' emphasising the importance of selflessness in the act of giving as demonstrated in the founder’s life.”

Anoop Seth, director, PYDS, in his speech, reminded the children to uphold the founder’s legacy, which encompasses his ideologies, compassion, motivation, and his role as a change-maker. He stressed the importance of “utilising the opportunities provided by PYDS to their fullest potential, encouraging students to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

A blood donation camp was organised on the ocassion in the school's infirmary, in which school staff, parents of students, and alumni took part.
