The quiet of a County Durham village was disturbed in the early hours by a graveyard fire which claimed one life.
Ushaw Moor Cemetery, which lies off Broom Lane in the County Durham town, was cordoned off for around eight hours on Thursday. At least one person who arrived to lay flowers on a grave was turned away, as police and fire investigators carried out their searches of the scene.
By early afternoon, the emergency services were able to confirm the tragic news. A man, believed to have previously gone missing, had died at the graveyard - police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
