US overdose deaths fell 27% last year, but remain far above EU levels

The US had 30,000 fewer drug overdose deaths in 2024 than the year before – the largest one-year decline ever recorded in a country grappling with a decades-long addiction crisis.

An estimated 80,000 Americans died from overdoses last year, according to early data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s down 27 per cent from the 110,000 who died in 2023.
