US launches fresh strikes on Iran as Trump weighs ‘major offensive’

  • The US military launched a fresh wave of strikes against Iran on Wednesday, targeting capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz , following the reinstatement of a naval blockade by American forces on Tuesday.
  • Donald Trump reportedly held an emergency meeting to discuss a major offensive against Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, having previously indicated 'other people' would launch a ground campaign and that he would hit Iran 'very hard'.
  • Trump reversed his plan to impose a 20 per cent fee on maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, stating that trade and investment deals with Gulf states would instead cover the costs for ships passing through the channel.
  • A British man detained in Iran has had two additional years added to his jail sentence for speaking to the press about his incarceration, with him and his wife, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, currently on hunger strike protesting their 10-year espionage sentences.
  • UK heating oil customers who experienced cancelled orders and price increases during the Iran war will be eligible for compensation, after the Competition Markets Authority found approximately 1,700 households paid up to £350 more due to market disruptions.
