US invites Putin to G20 summit later this year

  • The US will extend an invitation to Russian president Vladimir Putin for the G20 Summit in Miami this coming December, secretary of state Marco Rubio has confirmed.
  • Rubio told reporters on the margins of the General Assembly meeting that Trump has invited Putin to the G20 summit hosted at his Miami country club in December, adding that "we think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president, but with other world leaders."
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed Moscow's gratitude for the invitation, stating that the matter would be addressed through further diplomatic channels.
  • Meanwhile, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky urged international leaders to continue squeezing Russia's revenues and frustrate its war efforts, addressing the UN General Assembly in New York: "Russia's revenues must remain a target".
  • The president met US president Donald Trump on Tuesday, noting they also discussed a potential Russia-Ukraine ceasefire focused on energy-related targets.
