Meanwhile, COVID cases are surging across the US. BA.2.86 variant, nicknamed Pirola, is a cause for concern as it is the highly mutated variant of Omicron. As per a report by Yale Medicine says: "This variant, which has unofficially been nicknamed “Pirola,” a combination of the Greek letters Pi and Rho, has more than 30 mutations to its spike protein compared to XBB.1.5, a variant of Omicron that had been the dominant strain in the United States before being surpassed recently by EG.5. The spike protein is how the coronavirus enters human cells."
BA.2.86 was first detected in late July in Denmark and appeared in the U.S. in August.
Currently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed the variant under "variant of interest" category. "BA.2.86 may be more capable of causing infection in people who have previously had COVID-19 or who have received COVID-19 vaccines," the US CDC says.
The common symptoms that health experts are urging people to be aware of are runny nose, sneezing, cough, headache, and mild fever.
