The holiday, which marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans after the Civil War, celebrates the date June 19, 1865. Although the holiday has been celebrated by African Americans since the late 1800s, it became an official federal holiday in 2021, when President Biden signed legislation declaring the date an annual date of significance.
