On 20 February 2023, Americans will celebrate Presidents’ Day, an annual holiday that began in honour of George Washington.
The federal holiday, which is now used to celebrate both past and present US presidents, was first introduced in 1885. However, in 1971, the date of the holiday changed, when the US Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to give US workers more long weekends. Presidents’ Day, which used to be celebrated on 22 February, is now celebrated annually on the third Monday in February.
