Urban Meyer Makes Stunning Pick for ‘Best Roster in College Football’

Fox Sports college football analyst Urban Meyer spoke with Tim May of On3 about the upcoming season, and the former Ohio State, Florida and Utah coach gave a surprising pick for the best roster in the sport.

Could it be back-to-back national champion Georgia? Alabama? Ohio State?

How about Texas?

“I think Texas,” Meyer began. “You didn’t mention them, but don’t sleep on Texas this year. I was talking to [On3 recruiting analyst] Mark Pantoni, and I was talking to the recruiting director at Ohio State. Man for man, roster against roster, it’s hard to say Texas doesn’t have the best roster in college football.

“Now, they’ve got to play. It’s been a while since Texas has been good or elite,” Meyer continued. “But their quarterback, I watched him live against Alabama before he got hurt. They could have won that game. We all know Quinn Ewers from when he was at Ohio State. I think Georgia, Ohio State and Texas are all in pretty good shape.”

That’s a statement, but it’s also difficult to argue on paper. Since Steve Sarkisian arrived in Austin, he’s put together a pair of stellar recruiting classes as he looks to get the Longhorns program back to national relevancy.

Although Texas went through an up-and-down 8-5 campaign in 2022, the health of quarterback Quinn Ewers was certainly an aspect that hurt the program as the year went on. When healthy, he’s proven he’s capable of being one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12.

Texas took Alabama to the cusp in a hotly contested game in Austin last September, and if Meyer is correct in his assessment, the Longhorns may not be all that far off from truly being back.
