Uptown's Shuttered Weiss Memorial Hospital Loses Its State License, Leaving Neighbors to Rely on Other North Side ERs

Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood has lost its license, Illinois Department of Public Health officials said Wednesday, according to ABC7 Chicago. The 236-bed safety-net hospital on North Marine Drive closed its emergency department and inpatient units in August 2025 and ended its remaining outpatient services that November.

State health officials said hospital leadership had not made required improvements. Weiss could still reopen, but it would now have to go through the regular hospital licensing process.
