Update as surfer, 56, faces ‘long recovery’ after shark attack in Western Australia

  • A 56-year-old surfer, Mel Ismail, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a shark near Glenfield Beach in Western Australia.
  • Fellow surfer Shannon Dunn rescued Mr Ismail, who was approximately 40 metres from shore when the shark bit his leg and board.
  • Beachgoers assisted on the shore by using a surfboard leg rope as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding.
  • Medical staff at Geraldton Health Campus confirmed that Mr Ismail remains in a stable condition but faces a long recovery.
  • Western Australia Premier Roger Cook described the incident as horrifying, following two fatal shark attacks in the state earlier this year.
