UP Police exhume body of man for post-mortem after family alleges suicide

Mohammad Dilshad

AGRA: The city police on Saturday exhumed the body of a 40-year-old man from Meerapur's graveyard and sent it for post-mortem after his family alleged he committed suicide due to harassment by money lenders.

According to the police, Aas Mohammad was a resident of Meerapur area of Muzaffarnagar and worked as a labourer. He reportedly committed suicide on January 11, 2023.

The deceased’s family members filed a case against the money lender after they found threatening messages on Mohammad’s mobile phone.

"Mohammad borrowed Rs 13,000 from Mahakar Singh, a hotel owner. He had returned Rs 30,000 including interest, however, Singh continued harassing him for more money,” said Akil, the victim’s brother-in-law.

After receiving permission from the district magistrate, police on Saturday in the presence of SDM-CO, sent the body to the post-mortem house.

Vinod Kumar Singh, station house officer of the Meerapur police station, said," A case under section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of India penal code was registered. Further action will be taken once we receive the post-mortem report.”
