Unwed woman shown married online; 2 booked in Pune

PUNE: The Chandannagar police are investigating a 23-year-old woman’s complaint accusing a marriage bureau operator and his accomplice of preparing, as well as posting, a bogus certificate online showing her as married, despite her unmarried status, and defaming her. The woman had rejected the bureau operator’s proposal to marry him.

Assistant inspector Mohan Sonawane of the Chandannagar police told TOI, “The marriage bureau operator is from Ghorpadi. His aide is from Buldhana, who prepared the bogus marriage certificate of the woman on the suspect’s request. The woman lodged the complaint on Sunday.”

The police have registered a case of cheating, forgery and defamation against the absconding duo. “In May this year, the woman had lodged a complaint under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC against him. The court is hearing the case,” he said.
