The new wave of layoffs at Univision has been relentless, impacting several well-known personalities from the U.S. Spanish-language TV network. Among the most recognized names are Honduran journalist Maity Interiano and Venezuelan chef Jesus Díaz, better known as Chef Yisus.
While Díaz's departure was announced live on Despierta América, the show he had been part of since 2019, Interiano's exit was revealed by the Miami-based outlet Las Top News, where the network's national headquarters is located.
It has also been reported that other on-air talents who have left Univision include Roger Borges, a correspondent for the afternoon program Primer Impacto, as well as journalists Eduardo Padilla and Carolina Peguero, who were part of the news team at Vix, TelevisaUnivision's streaming platform.
Who is out of Univision?
In a letter signed by Daniel Alegría, the new CEO of TelevisaUnivision, it was also revealed that one of its most prominent executives, Jesús Lara, had also departed the company. Lara had successfully led Univision Radio's transition into streaming formats under the Uforia brand since 2017, as well as the development of new markets via a podcast platform.
Lara had also been in charge of overseeing operations for Univision's local channels. He will be replaced by José Luis Fabila, who operates from Mexico and is now tasked with "creating a new global content organization."
Juan Carlos Gutiérrez, news director at KDTV-14, Univision's station in San Francisco, also lost his position, but there's little doubt he won't be the last. The company had already shut down its Seattle station earlier this year.
In the next few days is also expected the exit of legendary journalist Jorge Ramos.
As Alegría makes clear in a letter sent to Univision employees, which was published by the website Media Moves, which monitors personnel changes among Latino journalists in the U.S., the company is undergoing significant changes.
"This week we are implementing significant and necessary changes, all with the goal of reforming our position for 2025 and beyond," he wrote-
"I understand this will be a week full of challenges, but I ask for your focus and resilience as we take these important steps toward a stronger and more connected future. Together, we are building a company positioned for sustained growth, innovation, and leadership.
Thank you for your trust, contributions, and commitment to our mission and goals."
