The University of Arizona addressed a recent incident involving protesters in a statement released on Wednesday. The university stated that law enforcement was compelled to take significant measures due to the dangerous actions exhibited by the protesters during attempts to disperse them. The President of the university, Robert C. Robbins, highlighted that a large gathering of both protestors and counter-protestors on Park Avenue had created a volatile environment.
Robbins further explained that, in collaboration with the University of Arizona Office of Public Safety and UAPD, a plan was executed to clear the area while prioritizing the safety of all individuals present. Law enforcement reportedly utilized pepper balls, rubber bullets, and tactical safety gear in a limited capacity to disperse the crowd and ensure the protection of themselves and others.
As a result of the operation, one undergraduate student, a graduate student, and two individuals unaffiliated with the university were arrested by the police. Despite the intensity of the situation, the university confirmed that there were no significant injuries reported following the incident.
