Sarnath, one of India’s ancient Buddhist sites, was inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, on Saturday. The site became India’s 45th site to receive this recognition. India has the sixth-highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites globally and the second-highest in the Asia-Pacific region.
Even though the ancient site of Sarnath remained in the tentative list of world heritage since 1998, the proposal to include the site to the world heritage list was sent for consideration of the World Heritage Committee in January 2025. The 48th session of the World Heritage Committee, at Busan, South Korea, took the decision on the inscription.
