United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the recent attack near Moscow that resulted in the tragic loss of over 130 lives. Speaking at a press conference held at El Arish International Airport in Egypt, Guterres emphasized the significant global threat posed by ISIS.
Guterres called for heightened international efforts to combat the terrorist organization and prevent future attacks on a global scale. He stressed the urgent need for all countries to collaborate in order to ensure that ISIS does not have the capability to carry out further strikes anywhere in the world.
Attributing the attack to ISIS, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the incident, although evidence supporting this claim has not been provided. Intelligence reports dating back to November indicated that ISIS-K had intentions to launch an attack in Russia, with specific warnings being communicated to Russian authorities by the US intelligence community.
Notably, the US embassy in Moscow issued a warning on March 7, alerting of imminent plans by extremists to target large gatherings in the capital city. Despite these warnings, Russia has successfully thwarted several ISIS-related incidents in March alone, as reported by state media agency sources.
Guterres reiterated the necessity for resolute action against ISIS, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating the terrorist organization.
