Western officials have issued warnings to Ukraine regarding a growing divide between the defense minister and the procurement chief, expressing concerns that this rift could undermine trust in the country. The conflict arose when the Defense Procurement Agency's board voted to extend director Maryna Bezrukova's contract, a decision that was later overruled by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. Umerov cited poor performance and alleged failures in delivering weapons and ammunition to front-line troops as reasons for not renewing Bezrukova's contract.
This decision has sparked controversy, with lawmakers and anti-corruption watchdogs criticizing the minister's actions as illegal under Ukrainian law. Bezrukova's supporters highlight her role in promoting transparency and implementing reforms within the DPA, which has long been plagued by corruption allegations.
