UK weather: Snow, sleet and strong winds on the way after Storm Eunice kills three

Brits are braced for more wind, rain and weather warnings in the aftermath of Storm Eunice in the weekend ahead.

Following record breaking 122mph winds, and at least three tragic deaths as a result of the storms, the country is still set to be battered by blustery and unsettled conditions.

Even though the worst of Storm Eunice is behind us, the Met Office has still issued yellow weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures will plummet to -1C overnight in some areas.

They have warned despite the very worst weather having come and gone today, there is still a risk posed by the wind and rain.

Storm Eunice's red warnings have now expired but continued disruption is expected with an Amber Warning for wind continuing until late on Friday evening.

Gusts in excess of 70mph are expected in places across England and Wales though overall winds are now easing from their earlier peak associated with Storm Eunice.

Winds of this strength could continue to damage buildings and trees with large waves around the coasts.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Ramsdale said: “Impacts will continue from Storm Eunice until late on Friday night, with continued high winds, especially in coastal areas.

“It's worth noting that despite the gradual easing of winds overall further impacts are likely from wind gusts continuing to reach 70 mph inland.

“Winds will decrease from their exceptionally high levels on Friday, but there’s a continued wet and windy theme for many through the weekend.”

The beginning of the weekend will see wet and windy conditions on Saturday to the south.

Yellow weather warnings for that day will cover much of the southwest, southern Wales and coastal areas in south England.

Gusts of winds could reach around 60mph on the coast and 40-50mph further in land.

Alongside this, much of the south will see persistent rainfall which will move eastwards as the day goes on.

Much of Scotland will enjoy a bright, clear day Saturday whilst the rest of the UK sees the rain and perhaps even some snow across parts of the Midlands and southern Pennines.

However, both Scotland and Northern Ireland have also been issued a yellow ice weather warning for Saturday, meaning extra care is needed when travelling especially in the morning.

Moving into Sunday, much of Wales, parts of the north-east, the midlands and south and west of England are in the clear.

Yellow weather warnings still apply to Northern Ireland, the north-west of England and Scotland.

A rain warning applies to part of the north west from Manchester and Burnley up to Carlise.

And a wind warning covers northern parts of Wales up the west coast of England into parts of Northern Ireland and most of Scotland.

The wind warning will last into Monday and means Brits are set for a weekend of wind even after Storm Eunice passes on.

Ramsdale said: “Winds will decrease from their exceptionally high levels on Friday, but there’s a continued wet and windy theme for many through the weekend.

“The south will see wet and windy conditions on Saturday, before areas to the north and west, including Northern Ireland, see some more potentially disruptive conditions on Sunday.

" Weather warnings have been issued but should be checked throughout the weekend for any ongoing updates.”
