UK weather: Dry and bright skies as Britain to bask in near 20C temperatures

Britain will be dry and bright on Tuesday as temperatures slowly climb over the course of the week.

A clear night on Monday night continues in the early hours of Tuesday morning, where temperatures will be well down into the single digits, with some spots in the countryside struggling to get about freezing.

The sun will be out pretty early, however, lifting the temperatures in the meantime. Northern Scotland will see the worst of the weather on Tuesday, with patchy rain trickling its way down the central belts from late morning.

There will be a little bit of cloud and maybe the odd shower in Northern Ireland but the mercury should be in the mid-teens throughout the country, with highs of 18C on the south coast.

An area of high pressure will dominate through the week and keep things fine and dry, with temperatures set to peak at 20C.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "Bit of a chilly start on Tuesday but most places will be dry and bright. We will see again some shower clouds bubbling up, just like on Monday.

"I suspect many places will stay dry and certainly for the Midlands, Wales and southern England looking largely dry. Some cloud will develop, it's not going to be blue skies, but dry and bright.

"We should get into the teens but still generally below average for the time of year, peaking in the south at 17C, 18C perhaps 19C."

Into the evening and there could be a couple of showers in northern and eastern England but they will be scattered and will fade out by midnight.

Wednesday morning will follow a similar pattern to Tuesday, with a cool start before brightening up, with temperatures reaching between 15C and 17C across the UK.

Mr Deakin added: "Generally another dry night as we head into Wednesday morning. It's a similar kind of story. Again, we'll start off a little fresh but we should start off with a bit of sunshine."
