UK-sponsored study visa applications fell 10.3 per cent year on year in September 2026, reaching a five-year low for the month. The decline comes amid tighter immigration rules and growing financial pressure on universities that rely heavily on international students’ tuition fees.
With overseas students contributing billions of pounds to the UK economy, falling demand could affect universities, jobs and the wider economy, including opportunities for Indian students considering higher education in Britain. According to official UK Home Office figures released a few days ago, sponsored study visa applications fell from 79,800 in September 2025 to 71,600 in September 2026. The decline follows a sharper drop in August, a month when applications usually increase ahead of the new academic term.
