Aldi has managed to narrowly pip rival Lidl to be named the cheapest supermarket for 2022, according to the latest monthly research.
Consumer champion group Which? tracked the prices across eight major supermarket chains including Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose for each month last year.
The monthly comparison found that Aldi managed to retain its crown as the cheapest supermarket from June to December, making it the cheapest for 2022 overall.
By comparison, its German rival Lidl was named the cheapest supermarket for five months from January to May.
For December, the Which? comparison tracked the cost of a basket of 48 groceries and found that the budget supermarket cost just £81.63, while Lidl came to a total of £83.24.
Tesco came in third with a total of £93.42, Asda came in fourth £93.44. They were followed by Sainsbury's with £95.71 and Morrisons with £97.12 and Ocado with £102.87.
The comparison also found that Waitrose retained its crown as the most expensive UK supermarket as a basket of the same groceries came to £112.62 - £30 pricier than Aldi.
Which? Also compared a larger trolley of branded items that are not always available at the two budget German supermarkets and found that Asda was the cheapest - a title it has retained for the last three years.
It was followed by Sainsbury’s (£368.97), Tesco (£375.97), Morrisons (£377.81) and Ocado (£386.68). Meanwhile, Waitrose was once again the most expensive option for a larger trolley (£406.95.)
The Which? comparison comes as households across the country have been battling rising inflation and grocery prices at the supermarket during the cost of living crisis.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: "We’re absolutely delighted to be yet again named the Cheapest Supermarket of the Year.
"As we head into the new year with continuing uncertainty and further challenging times ahead, we want to assure our customers that Aldi remains resolutely committed to providing them with the best quality products at the lowest possible prices. We are delighted that our efforts have been recognised by Which? for a second consecutive year."
