UK holidaymakers urged to 'act now' if planning holidays to Spain, Portugal or Greece

Anyone considering booking a holiday to Europe's most popular destinations should act now if they can to ensure they don't end up paying more than they have to, experts have warned.

Which? said that the price of a package holiday has jumped up by as much as 30% compared to last year for UK tourist hotspots like Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. The consumer group found that the average price someone can expect to fork out for one of these holidays is £867 per person.

Heading to Spain is still the cheapest option according to Which?, with a week-long package holiday costing £693 per person on average, BirminghamLive reports. Holidaymakers have been urged to book as soon as they can if they are planning a package holiday this year before prices go up again.

Data from Ice Travel Group found that the cost of a package holiday to Spain, Turkey or Italy has increased by a fifth or more, while travellers can expect to pay 15% more for a trip to Cyprus for a seven-night holiday this summer. Flights have seen the most significant price rises, with the cost of jetting off this Easter up 51% on average compared to the same time last year.

Figures from air fares analyst Skytra showed that flights to both Italy and Greece have increased by an eye-watering 71%. Outside of Europe, travel to the US, which costs £1,527 for a plane seat on average, saw the smallest price jump of 31%.

Which? travel editor Rory Boland said: “Travellers are likely to experience significantly higher prices than they’re used to for a trip away this year, with huge demand for holidays combining with inflationary pressure to create a perfect storm of spiralling costs.

“Flights in particular have seen some of the steepest price rises so far, with our research finding flights to popular destinations including Greece and Italy up 71% compared to last year.”
