UK holidaymakers in Mexico issued alert amid spate of tourist hotspot shootings

UK holidaymakers have been urged to remain vigilant after a drug-related violence in a popular tourist area of Mexico. Three people were shot during clashes between rival gangs in the Playa del Carmen area earlier this week.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice amid the surge of violent incidents in the area which includes the beach resort of Cancun and surrounding areas. Security footage showed tourists and shoppers rushing to escape shots were fired in a main shopping area.

Its latest bulletin stated: “Two foreign tourists were killed in Tulum, more tourists were injured during a shoot out in Puerto Morelos, and most recently there was a shooting in the Centre of Playa del Carmen, injuring three. There is currently an increased police presence in the Cancun area, including in the hotel zone. While tourists have not been the target, anyone in the vicinity of an incident could be affected.

“If you are visiting any of these areas, you should monitor local advice, remain vigilant and follow the advice of the local authorities and your tour operator.”

Mexican police are attempting to prevent the trouble escalating in tourist destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta. But the Foreign Office warning added: “Crime and violence are serious problems in Mexico and the security situation can pose a risk for foreigners. Many Mexican and foreign businesses choose to hire private security."

Holidaymakers were urged not to venture away from their hotels and only travel during the day. The FCDO warned: “You should research your destination thoroughly and only travel during daylight hours when possible. Monitor local media and inform trusted contacts of your travel plans.”

Earlier this month, a teenager was killed and another two individuals seriously injured after a shooting occurred at a popular seafood restaurant in Cancun. The municipal government has deployed extra security to surrounding areas to ensure the safety of the general public.
