UK Foreign Office issues Turkey travel warning for holidaymakers

Holidaymakers have been issued a travel warning from the UK Foreign Office after updated advice for those heading to Turkey from anywhere in the country - including Edinburgh.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) keep Brits updated on issues that could potentially impact their travel plans such as terrorism, local laws and customs, entry requirements, health, natural disasters, money, and more recently, Covid.

And now they have issued an update for those seeking to visit the Eastern provinces of Turkey.

According to the ECHO, they are advising against all but essential travel to the province of Hakkari. If you’re undertaking this essential travel to the province, you should take extreme care.

They also ask that people keep up-to-date with local media and follow the advice of the local authorities.

This is because Mount Ararat, in Ağrı province, is a special military zone, and access permission must be obtained from the Doğubayazıt Government Office, along with payment of a fee in the local Governor’s Office.

If you are visiting with a travel agent or tour group, you should first confirm if you require an individual permit.
