Nate Diaz had a night to remember at UFC 279, and now he gets to enter free agency with a lot of hype around his name and a whole lot of leverage.
After waiting more than a year to complete the final bout on his UFC contract, Diaz (20-14 MMA, 15-12 UFC) finally got to step back in the octagon on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It wasn’t against Khamzat Chimaev as originally scheduled, but Tony Ferguson (25-8 MMA, 15-6 UFC) instead, who Diaz managed to submit in the fourth round of the welterweight bout.
Diaz was clear about his intentions in the aftermath of the event. He wants to take some marquee fights outside of the UFC, but plans to be backside the world-famous octagon one day. It just depends on when.
