Uber driver 'could have been killed' after crash at 'dangerous' junction

An Uber driver's livelihood "has been ruined in one moment" after an alleged hit and run in Toxteth.

Osama Hamad was driving in the Princes Road area of Toxteth on August 17 when another car "ran straight into his side" at the roundabout on the junction of Bentley Road and Princes Gate East. Fortunately, the Uber driver was physically unhurt but left "shaken" after the incident and says the other driver "failed to stop."

He now faces an uncertain future as his car was classed as a "write off", leaving him unable to provide for his pregnant wife, Jodie, and disabled son short-term. Jodie told the ECHO the incident, which happened at around 10.30pm, has even left her husband debating getting a different job.

She said: "He was coming home from work and was at the roundabout when all of a sudden a car hit him. He didn't know what happened at first, his airbags deployed and knocked his glasses off so he was trying to get them.

"He was shaken up, he couldn't get the registration but we've had barely any help from police. He was there for two hours because recovery didn't want him driving the car, police didn't show up and it was a few hours wait for an ambulance, he ended up coming home.

"Thank God he was fine but it's affecting our lives even now. Me and my son now have covid, I'm pregnant and he has Down's Syndrome, we won't be able to get to and from appointments.

"It's brought on financial worries, we need money for a house, a lot of things have come at once and we need the car, especially with my son's disability. It's just awful."

Jodie went on to say she was struggling to find CCTV of the incident, adding: "What if the driver does it again?

"They could've killed my husband. There was that much impact the air bags came up, the car is a write off. It wasn't just a small accident. He's now thinking about changing his job, it's scary. I'm on edge because he wants to go out on his bike but I won't let him of a night."

"It's a dangerous junction, no-one stops when they come around the roundabout, more needs to be done. It's disgusting, someone's life is ruined in a moment and it's a shame."

Taking to social media, the worried mum appealed for any information, saying Osama was heading in the direction of the GP surgery when the other car hit him and drove off towards Croxteth Road. She wrote: "My husband thankfully is okay but his car is a write off.

"He is a taxi driver and is working all hours to provide for me, his wife, who is currently pregnant, and our little boy who is one, is disabled and needs use of the car to get to medical appointments that he has coming up. Please If anyone has any information please private message me."

Many people were quick to comment on the "dangerous junction" as one Facebook user said: "The junction is deadly." Another added: "It is dangerous there, and something needs to be done, it really does."

Merseyside Police confirmed that around 10.30pm on Wednesday, August 17, the force received a report of a collision at the junction of Bentley Road and Princes Gate East, near Princes Park, Toxteth.

A spokesperson added: "It was reported that the collision involved a black Toyota Prius and a Mercedes. It was further reported that the Mercedes failed to stop at the scene. No injuries were reported, but the Toyota Prius was damaged.
