Tyson Fury jokes his dad John will be "blind drunk" when Dillian Whyte fight starts

Tyson Fury has joked his dad John might be too drunk to watch his world title clash with Dillian Whyte next weekend.

Fury vs Whyte will mark the first time John has been in attendance for one of his son's fights since 2018. John has been unable to travel to the US to watch Tyson fight because of a grievous bodily harm charge dating back to 2011.

The 57-year-old was sent to prison in 2011 for 11 years after gouging out the eye of former friend Oathie Sykes after a long-running feud. He was released from custody and was ringside for Tyson's 2015 win over Wladimir Klitschko in Germany, but is not allowed into the US.

"It's good that my dad can come to the fight, maybe he'll be on the undercard starting it [off]," Fury said. "He might be too drunk to see the fight by the time he gets in the ring, it'll be his first victory since the 90s! So he might be absolutely blinded by the time it comes about."

Fury has joked about getting his dad, who hasn't fought since 1995, to compete on the undercard of his world title clash. John laughed off the comment by calling it "total bull****" and asked why anyone would want to see someone his age fighting on the card.

John retired from boxing with a record of 8-4-1, being knocked out in his last two fights. John has continued to train since his retirement and Tyson said his dad has carried out a full training camp alongside him ahead of his fight next weekend.

"He's done a full camp and has been with me the whole time," Fury continued. "Watching over things, taking a few heart attacks, but overall we've had a really good training camp. I'm sure he's enjoyed to be a part of it as he's been away for such a long time."

Fury's two comeback fights in 2018 against Sefer Seferi and Francisco Pianeta were the last fights John was able to watch live. Four years later he will be ringside again, as Fury said: "I think the last camp he was at was in 2018 when I boxed last in the UK.

"So it's been a while since he's been to a training camp, I've had all the rest of my fights in America but it's been good, he's kept everyone on the straight and narrow."
