Anti-immigrant buoys that went adrift amid Rio Grande flooding force closure of key bridge to Mexico

Buoys that the federal government planned to install as anti-immigration deterrents drifted into the Rio Grande amid severe flooding, prompting officials to close several key bridges along the U.S.-Mexico border near Eagle Pass on Thursday and in Laredo on Sunday.

Eagle Pass shut down transit at two bridges for about three hours Thursday while it worked to determine whether the approximately 100 buoys posed a threat, City Manager Homero Balderas said. About 9,000 vehicles cross both bridges daily, transiting between Eagle Pass and Las Piedras.
