Two teenagers found dead in nature reserve

Police are investigating the deaths of two teenagers after bodies were found in a nature reserve.

Officers were called to Bothenhampton Nature Reserve after a member of the public discovered the bodies of the teenage boy and girl.

Detectives have since been investigating at the scene inside the nature reserve near Bridport, Dorset.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "At 10.11am on Tuesday we received a report of two people, a girl and a man - both in their late teens, having been found dead at Wych Hill.

"To be precise, the location given was Bothenhampton Reservoir, Wych Hill. Officers attended and there are no suspicious circumstances. Their next of kin have been informed and the coroner notified."

Post mortem examinations are to be carried out on the bodies to ascertain exactly how they died.

Dorset Police has referred itself to the policing watchdog.

“Dorset Police has made a mandatory referral to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) in line with procedures related to the death or serious injury of an individual,” a spokeswoman said.

“We await further guidance from the IOPC on the matter.”

By law, certain incidents must be automatically referred to the IOPC, including when someone had direct or indirect contact with the police “when or shortly before they were seriously injured and died”.

Forces are only required to make a referral “where the contact may have caused or contributed to the death or injury”.

Other complaints, such as allegations of serious corruption, serious assault, or misconduct must also be automatically referred.

Dorset Police and the IOPC have been approached for more information.
