A man who is yet to be formally identified has died in a fiery crash along the New South Wales-Victoria border.
About 7am on Tuesday, emergency services were called to Mulwala-Barooga Road at Boomanoomana, about 15km north west of Mulwala.
On arrival police found a car had hit a tree.
Murray River Police District Chief Inspector Jy Brown said the car was alight when officers arrived.
"Unfortunately, the vehicle caught fire and we had to utilise Fire and Rescue NSW to extinguish the vehicle prior to anything else being able to be undertaken by emergency services," he said.
The male driver was the sole occupant of the car.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
Road toll worsens
As the road toll continues to climb in NSW and Victoria, Inspector Brown said recent numbers were some of the worst he had seen in his time policing the district.
"It's probably the worst that I've seen for a long time," he said.
"We are well aware that northern Victoria has also seen a number of really serious fatal collisions."
In the past week, 10 people have died on Victorian roads.
It has taken the state's road toll this year to 134, up from 96 at the same time last year.
"[People need to] be careful, drive to the speed limit, drive to the conditions of the roads that they're on. And slow down," Inspector Brown said.
"I can only urge motorists to be extra careful on our roads, so that emergency services personnel don't have to continue to turn up to these type of incidents."
Meanwhile, officers at the Murray River Police District are also investigating the circumstances surrounding a crash that has left a teenager fighting for life.
Earlier Tuesday morning (5am), a motorcycle ridden by a 16-year-old boy crashed at Parkland Crescent, Lavington.
The teenager was treated at the scene before being conveyed to Albury Hospital in a stable condition.
The pillion passenger, a 15-year-old boy, was taken to Albury Hospital in a critical condition.
A crime scene has been established as investigations continue.
