Two new family businesses bringing treats to Kilmarnock

A new family business, Madd Desserts, is toasting success after opening its doors inside a New Farm Eatery chip shop in Kilmarnock.

The dessert business was opened by Dylan Nixon who, after having his youngest son with his partner Daynah Mason, decided it would be a great idea to spend more family time together and open something both of their children can get involved in.

Dylan, 27, said: “I chose to do desserts because of my five-year-old son who loves pancakes. Me and my partner used to make him desserts in the house so we thought about getting adventurous and starting up Madd Desserts.

“It’s an exciting new adventure and opportunity to hopefully bring in some joy and treats to Kilmarnock and the New Farm Loch area as there isn’t much up here in terms of hot desserts or fresh ice cream.”

A new business is open inside the chip shop, which was also opened recently by Gugy Summel who owns the local Premier shop next door.

Dylan’s partner, Daynah, added: “We understand that some people have a sweet tooth and like to have a dessert after their meal which makes it the ideal location.

"Both businesses are open throughout the day when the schools are open and offer a reduced menu to cater for the students at the local schools.

“We both appreciate how important it is in times such as this to have local family-run businesses. We strive to offer the best customer service we can to our customers and are open for feedback and are willing to make any changes necessary for our customers.”

Dylan and Gugy are not only business owners now but also have a boxing history between them.

Dylan said: “Everyone in Kilmarnock knows or will of heard of the name Gugy, he is a popular man with his Premier shop being open for 35 years roughly.

“As from a boxing side of things, Gugy is also one of my trainers who is helping me take the next step into my professional career after boxing amateur and semi-pro for a mix of 16 years where I won a few Scottish titles.

“I have a good relationship with Gugy that came from the boxing background, and we both look forward to starting this new venture and hopefully creating a few new job opportunities in the Ayrshire area.”

Madd Desserts is open from 4pm until 9.30pm and offers a variety of desserts including waffles, pancakes, crepes, milkshakes, cheesecake, ice cream and more.

Both the chip shop and the dessert shop are also open between 12pm until 2pm on school days and are running discounted menus within this time.

Dylan is also planning to expand his business and plans to open another dessert shop under the same name in Darvel later this year.
