Chances are, if you've driven the Snowy Mountains Highway between Adaminaby and Kiandra, you've passed Sawyers Hill Rest House, also known as Sawyers Hut. Sitting just metres from the roadside, it is probably the most recognisable and easiest to visit of all the high-country huts. But hidden behind its timber walls is a little-known story that has largely slipped from public memory - one as strange as any in the mountains.
On a cold October night in 1952, three men bunked down inside the hut. By morning, two were dead. What happened inside the little roadside refuge initially baffled investigators.
