Two groups of students clashed at the Central University of Karnataka (CUK) Kalaburagi on Sunday allegedly over performing Ramanavami Puja on the campus. Two students were injured in the incident.
The fight started after students affiliated to Left outfits expressed reservations over performing puja at the Lakshmi temple on the campus by the other group.
A group of students led by Sadiq — who is from Andhra Pradesh and is pursuing MBA — and Rahul, PhD scholar stated that no religious activity should be conducted on the campus. Vishwanath of Jewargi taluk in Kalaburagi district and Narendra from Rajasthan who were injured in the incident were admitted to the district hospital here.
“A case has been registered against five students, including Sadiq, Rahul Arya, and Rahul at the Narona police station and investigation is on, “ Superintendent of Police Isha Pant said.
CUK Vice-Chancellor Battu Satyanarayana told The Hindu told that the disciplinary committee of CUK had started an inquiry into the incident and no student had been suspended as of now. Further action would be initiated after the committee submits its report,” he added.
Reacting to the incident, honorary president of Sri Ram Sene Siddalinga Swami said that like the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, the CUK Kalaburagi was becoming a Left bastion. “The accused should be suspended and put behind bars,” he added.
Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest and submitted a memorandum demanding justice for Vishwanath and Narendra.
Meanwhile, Dalit Sene leader Hanumanth Yelasanghi and RPI leader A.B. Hosamani staged protest demanding withdrawal of cases registered against Dalit students. An FIR has been registered to harass Dalit students, they alleged.
