Two Call the Midwife favourites to leave BBC series in Christmas special

Call The Midwife has seen many beloved characters come and go over the years and it seems that two more favourites will exit Nonnatus House this Christmas. It's been reported that two popular characters are set to leave during the Call the Midwife Christmas special as both Sister Hilda and Sister Frances are expected to leave the show.

Sister Hilda, played by Fenella Woolgar, is already absent by the time the festive special kicks off, having been called away for God’s work at the Mother House. And it won’t be long before young Sister Frances, played by Ella Bruccoleri, is packed off to join her after falling off her bike in the snow during a birth emergency.

The Christmas episode will be a feature-length special that will air on Christmas Day on BBC One and ChronicleLive has reported the two characters will leave during the episode. One insider said: "Ella and Fenella are off doing other things now - but that doesn’t mean they won’t come back again at some point. They’ll both be missed." Actress Jenny Agutter, who plays Nonnatus House head nun Sister Julienne, agreed: "The door is always open."

Both Ella and Fenella joined the popular series in 2019 however it is not all bad news for Call The Midwife fans. Well-loved character Trixie Franklin, played by Helen George, will be returning as a reformed alcoholic. The actress was written out during the last series as she took maternity leave for her second child.

The Christmas storylines will feature the ongoing fallout from the Thalidomide scandal, which has left young Susan Mullucks struggling to be included by other kids and turned her dad into an alcoholic. Elsewhere in the Christmas special a young, abandoned pregnant woman will be cast out into the street as she goes into labour and Fred Buckle, played by Cliff Parisi, organises a talent show.
