'Twister Tower' Borrows Inspiration From 'BioShock,' But You Will Be Running Away From Scary Mascots

Horror games are one of the most played games among players. When it comes to indie titles, it's a hit or miss for everyone. For FPS fans, exploring a handful of horror indie games gives you a chance to see the creepy world of "Twisted Tower."

You're going to cross the unsettling environments with fast gunfights and bizarre enemies. Its Art Deco-inspired world may immediately remind some players of "BioShock." The similarities mostly end there.

Instead of focusing on slower exploration, the game leans into quick movement and aggressive combat. It also keeps its campaign short. The main story takes roughly four hours to complete.

That shorter runtime works in its favor. The game delivers its ideas without dragging them out.

A Strange Story About Love and Horror

The story follows Vincent, a young man living in the 1950s. He is engaged to Charlotte, a woman with a deep passion for movies.

Her favorite film is "Twisted Tower." It is considered one of the greatest movies ever made.

According to the YouTube trailer, things take a disturbing turn after Vincent and Charlotte become engaged. The film's mysterious director creates an amusement park based on his movies. He and his henchmen later kidnap Charlotte and bring her to the attraction.

Vincent follows them inside.

However, the rescue mission quickly becomes a nightmare. The park is filled with strange creatures and dangerous encounters. Vincent must fight his way through the attraction while searching for Charlotte.

The story also unfolds through letters and audio recordings. These collectibles provide more information about Vincent, his family, and his relationship with Charlotte.

Some of these discoveries give the story more emotional depth. They also help make the ending more impactful than expected.

Fast-Paced Combat Keeps Things Moving

Combat is one of Twisted Tower's strongest features.

The environments have a colorful but worn-down Art Deco style. Period advertisements and signs help sell the game's unusual setting. The gunplay takes a different direction.

Movement is quick, and enemies are aggressive. Standing still for too long can quickly become a problem.

This makes encounters feel closer to a modern boomer shooter than a traditional slow-paced horror game. Players need to keep moving while choosing the right weapon for each situation.

There is also plenty of weapon variety.

The pistol is useful against weaker enemies. The shotgun can handle groups at close range. Other weapons are much stranger.

Players can use giant hammers, slingshots, gumballs, and even a wooden clown mallet. The unusual arsenal adds some humor to an otherwise creepy setting.

A Straightforward Upgrade System

Weapon upgrades are handled through vending machines. Players can spend collected tickets to improve their equipment.

Damage upgrades are useful. More ammunition is also helpful during tougher encounters, according to Kotaku.

Some alternate firing modes are less impressive. Still, the system remains simple enough that it never gets in the way of the action. What will easily capture your interest is that its simplicity fits the game's overall design.

Clowns Turn Up the Horror

The tower is packed with disturbing enemies and jump scares. Clowns are especially important to the game's horror. One section is dedicated almost entirely to them.

Overall, your experience can be creepy without becoming overly complicated. "Twisted Tower" may not reinvent the horror FPS, but it knows what makes this type of game entertaining.
