Domingo German had his best outing of the season for the Yankees against the Twins in a 6-1 New York win, but it came with some controversy.
After the third inning, the umpires checked German for sticky substances and appeared to give the pitcher and manager Aaron Boone instructions moving forward. When German took the field for the fourth, crew chief James Hoye checked him again, leading to a lengthy conversation regarding whatever was on German’s hand.
Hoye seemed to tell German something like “you have to wash your hands,” indicating that German may have had a foreign substance on his right hand. However, German remained in the game, which did not go over well with Twins manager Rocco Baldelli, who fought the decision and ultimately was ejected from the game.

German threw 5 1/3 perfect innings and ultimately left the game after allowing just three hits and one run after 6 1/3 innings of work. Previously, in 7 2/3 innings pitched this year before Saturday, German had allowed six runs on six hits and five walks.
After the game, Boone told reporters that German had too much rosin on his hands before taking the mound.
“It was enough to raise a flag for him,” Boone said, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
