Stand By Me (Rob Reiner, 1986), 3am, Sky Cinema Greats
“I never had any friends later like the ones I had when I was 12.” With that closing line, this 1986 adaptation of a Stephen King novella cemented its status as the ultimate coming-of-age movie. Its 1950s-set story concerns four boys (including an memorable performance from the late River Phoenix) who set out on a macabre journey to find the body of a missing classmate. Stand By Me was always a classic, but subsequent events – including the tragic death of much beloved director Rob Reiner – have invested rewatches with added poignancy. Ellen E Jones
