One Day in October

9pm, Channel 4

The numbing horrors of what happened when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Be’eri kibbutz on 7 October last year are told through security and personal camera footage, as well as the testimonies of those who survived. It took seven hours for the Israel Defense Forces to arrive in numbers; by the end, 101 civilians had been killed and 32 hostages taken. The accounts are incomprehensibly terrifying, with one father saying that, at the time, he preferred for his daughter to be killed than kidnapped. Hollie Richardson

The Repair Shop

8pm, BBC One

Diane and Mark’s painted canvas provides a lovely story this week: it features the insignia for the amateur dramatics club (the oldest one in Scotland) where they met and fell in love in the 50s. Can Lucia Scalisi restore it so that it will proudly hang on the wall at Leslie town hall, where the club has been relocated? HR

Portrait Artist of the Year 2024

8pm, Sky Arts

Which eager amateur artist will get to create Lorraine Kelly’s portrait for National Galleries Scotland? It’s time for this year’s competition, hosted by Stephen Mangan. In the first round, the contestants need to capture brave celebrity sitters Hannah Waddingham (with her Emmy award), Saskia Reeves and Richard Madeley. HR

Ludwig

9pm, BBC One

David Mitchell’s baffled expression continues to work overtime in this detective comedy drama. He heads back to the police station while pretending to be his missing brother. But he finds himself trying to solve another whodunnit when a guide hosting a walking tour of Cambridge is found dead. Hannah Verdier

Parole

9pm, BBC Two

Part of what makes this sobering documentary series so effective is that, essentially, it asks the viewer to make the same judgment as the parole panel: does this prisoner deserve to be free? In the cases of Adrian and Daniel – locked up for violent crimes – it is a complex process of weighing up personal and official testimony. Graeme Virtue

DNA Journey With Ancestry

9pm, ITV1

Genealogy shows never fail to surprise, but the first journey in the latest season of this series really ups the stakes, as the actors (and best mates) John Simm and Philip Glenister take DNA tests. Simm learns that his dad isn’t his biological father and that he has a half‑sibling he never knew about. HR

Film choice

Knox Goes Away (Michael Keaton, 2023), Prime Video
During a talkshow appearance to promote the Beetlejuice sequel, Michael Keaton mentioned the film he directed last year. The host reeled off the film’s premise – “ageing hitman with dementia” – and Keaton sat stricken as the audience reacted with titters. In truth, this film is far from a comedy. Keaton plays a contract killer with Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease – the human form of BSE – on a race against time to redeem himself before he loses lucidity entirely. It’s a hardboiled thriller in which Keaton gives one of his best ever performances. Stuart Heritage
