Best TV shows on TV tonight

Waterloo Road, 8 pm, BBC One

Nicky’s financial struggles intensify tonight – the dinner lady owes Vinny the Villain thousands. With the loan shark darkening her door and threatening to harm her children, Preston (Noah Valentine) and Tonya, if she doesn’t pay what she owes, Nicky (Kym Marsh) has to take drastic action, finding an unlikely ally in the process.

Meanwhile, it’s the day of Waterloo Road’s fun run and Preston is feeling under pressure to be first over the finish line, but soon runs into problems… Packed with drama, rivalry and shocks galore, this episode paves the way for next week’s nail-biting finale.

The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5

In a car park in Kirkbymoorside, vet Peter Wright is dealing with his first lambing emergency of the year. Clive’s heavily pregnant ewe gave birth to one lamb the day before, but its twin is stuck. Clive prepares for bad news, but Peter wastes no time
in getting ‘stuck in’... Elsewhere, David Melleney repairs a nasty rip to a dog’s ear. This isn’t any dog, though; this is his dog’s best friend – and it’s personal.

Tonight’s highlight has to be Julian Norton sizing up his patient Prince– a rather large pedigree boar who has two dangerously long ingrowing tusks piercing his cheeks. Prepare for excruciating squealing as Julian turns dentist.

Dr. Death, 10 pm, Channel 4

This gripping eight-part true-crime drama, originally available on Starzplay, sees Fringe’s Joshua Jackson play notorious American surgeon Christopher Duntsch, whose lack of training saw dozens of his patients left injured or dead from his botched operations. The series follows two fellow surgeons, Dr Kirby (Christian Slater) and Dr Henderson (Alec Baldwin), who make it their personal mission to bring Duntsch to justice because of his dangerous incompetence. Kelsey Grammer also stars as the rogue surgeon’s former supervisor.

Your Home Made Perfect, 8 pm, BBC Two

Angela Scanlon returns with the property makeover show offering homeowners the chance to see different virtual-reality versions of their house, as two architects compete to take on the remodel. In tonight’s episode, Will Foster and Julian McIntosh face off to redesign Yesim and Hasan’s 1920s semi in north London. The couple have a big extended family and would love a space where everyone can eat together, but the disconnected layout of the house is a problem. Can either Will or Julian give them their dream home?

Best box set on TV tonight

Black Mirror season 6Netflix

It’s four years since we last saw Charlie Brooker’s tech-based anthology series – and now it’s back for series six. There’s a great cast, with Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett starring in an episode called Beyond the Sea set in 1969 about two men on a hi-tech mission, while British stars John Hannah and Monica Dolan’s story sees them in a Scottish town with dark secrets. Other stars include Industry’s Myha’la Herrold, plus Paapa Essiedu, Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek Pinault.

Best film on TV tonight

Local Hero, 6.35pm, Film4

Bill Forsyth’s exquisite comedy about big business and a Scottish coastal village is about as perfect as a film can get, and it’s marking its 40th anniversary this year. Burt Lancaster’s Texan oil tycoon dispatches young exec Peter Riegert to buy up the entire village in the Highlands to obtain the drilling rights. Predominantly run by the brilliant Denis Lawson, the locals have a few surprises of their own.
