Best TV shows on TV tonight

Lost Dogs with Clare Balding, 8 pm, Channel 5

Crufts presenter and animal-lover Clare is hoping to reunite missing dogs with their owners in this three-part series. Each edition features missing and found dogs, with viewers being asked to contact the programme if they have any information that might lead to a happy reunion.

Canine experts are on hand to offer advice on how best to keep our dogs safe – everything from not leaving them tied up outside shops to getting them microchipped or even putting trackers on them. There are also heartwarming stories of missing dogs that have been returned to their relieved families, sometimes against the odds.

Retro Electro Workshop, 9 pm, Yesterday

The Repair Shop fans will like this series, which is similar, with its expert know-how and personal backstories, but it is specifically – and geekily – about electronics. Plus, there is the added element of profit-making, as father-and-son T and Shamil scour storage units for items to sell on after restorers Rob Howard and Matt Marchant have worked their magic. This week’s fixes are an Atari video gaming system, a 1930s Defiant radio and a Pinocchio puppet, which needs to dance again for fosterers Ted and Jean. Thanks for the memories.

Bake Off: The Professionals, 8 pm, Channel 4

The four remaining teams from the first heats face their toughest challenge so far – Chocolate Week! The pairs create 24 chocolate dome-shaped figurines and 24 chocolate desserts with nuts, and the pressure is on because exacting judge Benoit Blin threatens to ‘go nuts’ if their offerings are not nutty enough!

Then for the Showpiece, nerves are jangling as the teams make two batches of 24 chocolate bars – one lot moulded, one dipped in yet more yummy chocolate! – which must be integrated into an archaeology-themed structure with a moving part. But which three teams will Benoit and Cherish ‘dig’ and whose time in the contest will be ‘done and dusted’?

Your Home Made Perfect, 8 pm, BBC Two

Architects Lizzie Fraher and Will Foster go head-to-head to redesign the home of likeable Borehamwood couple Wes and Reena. They own a three-bed 1960s terrace, but what with working from home, their daughter’s toy collection and their love of entertaining, the space is just not adequate.

And as for the storage… Reena wants something akin to ‘the Love Island village’, so will Lizzie’s practical two-metre extension that includes ‘the dream’ (aka a utility room) or Will’s larger colourful vision inspired by the family’s trips to Barbados win out? This week’s takeaway tip: only have 30% of the things you own on show to avoid anxiety.

The Replacement, Channel 4

Originally shown on BBC1 in 2017, here’s another chance to see this three-part psychological thriller on demand starring Vicky McClure and Morven Christie. Ellen (Christie) is preparing for her maternity leave from her architectural practice when she finds the perfect replacement in mum-of-one Paula (McClure). But when Paula comes in to job-shadow, Ellen begins to see her as a friend-stealing manipulator.

Are her own insecurities to blame or is Paula trying to take over Ellen’s life, not just her job? With an air of Single White Female about it, this is a spine-tingling take on office politics, with a good amount of ambiguity as you’re never quite sure whose side you’re on.
