Telangana Congress leaders led by TPCC president A. Revanth Reddy met AICC former president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, and handed over a cheque of ₹6.34 crore to be passed on to the New India Assurance Company as a premium for insurance of 40 lakh members of the party.
Mr. Revanth Reddy explained to him on the digital membership drive taken up and the insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh provided to each of the 40 lakh members enrolled. He said though 30 lakh membership was promised to AICC, the number touched 40 lakh with details of each member digitised. “The response was overwhelming,” he told Mr. Gandhi.
The cheque was handed over to the representatives of the New India Assurance Company.
Senior leaders of the party who met Mr. Gandhi included N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, TPCC working presidents Mahesh Kumar Goud, Anjan Kumar Yadav, J. Geetha Reddy and Mohd. Azharuddin; senior leaders K. Jana Reddy, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Mohd Shabbir Ali, Damodar Rajanarasimha, Madhu Yaskhi Goud, Mallu Ravi and digital membership co-ordinator Harkara Venugopal.
Later, Mr. Gandhi had a meeting with the Telangana Congress leaders where the ongoing paddy procurement crisis was discussed. Sources said that Mr. Revanth Reddy explained how Mr. Gandhi’s tweet had generated the heat with TRS leaders vying to respond with their arguments.
Mr. Reddy also explained how the TRS and BJP were together in ‘misleading’ the farmers trying to shift the blame on each other even as the farmers were worried, a senior leader involved in the meeting said. “Mr. Gandhi asked us to keep the pressure and reach out to farmers explaining how both the ruling parties were trying to cheat them,” the senior leader revealed.
