Trump’s handling of the economy hits a new low with Americans, says poll

President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy has hit a new low with Americans, according to a new poll.

As Americans struggle with soaring gas prices and high grocery bills, they aren’t feeling too confident about Trump’s job with the economy.

Just 29 percent of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of how Trump is handling the economy, while a staggering 63 percent disapprove, according to a new The Economist/YouGov poll.

Trump’s net approval rating on the issue is negative 34 percent — the lowest of both of his presidential terms so far, YouGov said in a news release. In his first term, from 2017 to 2021, more Americans approved than disapproved of his job with the economy, according to YouGov.

The annual inflation rate rose to 3.8 percent in April, the highest level since 2023.

Energy costs were up 3.8 percent and food prices rose 0.5 percent from March, according to the Consumer Price Index, which the government uses to track the cost of goods and services over time.

The Iran war, which Trump started alongside Israel at the end of February, has driven fuel costs up.

In May, gas prices averaged more than $4.50 a gallon, up from around $2.98 when the war began, according to the Associated Press. The national average for a gallon of gas now sits at around $4.16, according to the AAA auto club.

Restaurant chains recently launched promotions to get budget-conscious customers through the door, including Applebee’s “All You Can Eat” menu and Red Lobster’s “Endless Shrimp” offer.

Meanwhile, Cracker Barrel, a Southern-style restaurant chain known as a respite for families on road trips, is giving customers a chance to win a $500 Cracker Barrel gift card and a $500 gas gift card during their next visit.

Americans have doubted Trump’s job with the economy so much that he’s polling worse on the issue than former President Joe Biden was when he left office.

A whopping 70 percent of Americans said they disapprove of how Trump is handling the cost of living, while just 22 percent said they approve in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

When Biden left office in 2025, after facing strong criticism for his handling of an economy rattled by the Covid-19 pandemic, 63 percent of Americans disapproved of his handling of the cost of living, while 29 percent approved.
