A dramatic exchange supposedly showing Donald Trump admitting the United States needs '$2 billion a day' to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has gone viral again, accompanied by an explosive response attributed to China's foreign minister.

There is one major problem: the exact Trump quote cannot be traced to an official White House transcript, while the Chinese response does not appear in China's published Foreign Ministry records.
