Trump-XI Summit Extends Trade Truce and Sets AI Dialogue, Leaves Taiwan Unresolved

President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping wrapped a three-day state visit to Washington, DC on Friday with a short trade truce extension and new mechanisms for artificial intelligence cooperation, yet they left the Taiwan question shaping Asian security firmly unresolved, after three days of talks that produced limited progress on several major disputes.

Trump greeted Xi planeside at Joint Base Andrews on 23 September, later hosted a state dinner filled with technology chief executives including Apple's Tim Cook, and agreed to extend the existing trade truce by two months, to 10 January 2027. Xi also announced a loan of two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to Zoo Atlanta.
