Trump trolled online after praising ‘truly great friendship’ with President Xi

  • President Donald Trump praised his strong relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as the two met at the White House for a high-profile state visit.
  • Trump faced social media backlash over a resurfaced 2012 tweet in which he had criticized then-President Barack Obama for hosting Xi Jinping with full military honors.
  • ​“So wrong! @BarackObama is hosting China's VP Xi Jinping today at the Pentagon with a full honor ceremony with music and cannons…” Trump wrote at the time.
  • ​Social media users quickly flocked to X to point out that it was now Trump who was hosting Xi at the White House, with YouTuber Adam Mockler replying to the U.S. president’s old tweet with an image of him welcoming his Chinese counterpart. “This you?” Mockler wrote.
  • The White House heavily restricted media access during the Oval Office bilateral meeting, allowing only still photographers into the room. A federal judge issued an order temporarily blocking the Trump administration's press ban on reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
