Trump risks fresh controversy by taking Qatari gift jet overseas

  • President Donald Trump is scheduled to travel to Ireland on 12 and 13 September aboard a Boeing 747 donated by Qatar, despite pending security upgrades.
  • The $400m jet was temporarily removed from presidential service in July following a potential Iranian threat at the NATO summit in Turkey.
  • White House officials have not confirmed when the security upgrades will begin, with reports suggesting work could be delayed until after the US midterm elections in November.
  • Trump's itinerary in Ireland includes meetings with President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, as well as a visit to his Doonbeg golf resort.
  • The Qatari aircraft serves as a temporary replacement while Boeing builds two new official Air Force One jets under a program estimated to cost over $5.6bn.
